Sviluppo di una procedura Web per l'ausilio alla diagnosi di enfisema su immagini TC
Amendola T., Chimenti M., Fantini E., Tampucci M.
Thanks to the introduction of detection systems and reconstruction algorithms that allow three-dimensional views of anatomical structures and their functionalities, during the last decade, the imaging solutions for medical issues have suffered a wide expansion and diffusion. The huge amount of available data for a single diagnostic exam requires the development of software able to store the analysis results performed on the acquired images. This article describes a Web infrastructure for the analysis of thorax radiological images obtained through computed tomography (CT) with volumetric acquisition. In particular, the infrastructure is able to perform lung densitometry analysis for pulmonary emphysema diagnosis and follow-up. The infrastructure has been realized as an upgraded version of an offline one sharing, with it, the imaging techniques.

Studio di fattibilità sul rilevamento di enfisema in immagini ottenute mediante TAC a spirale con bassa dose
Amendola T., Chimenti M., Fantini E., Tampucci M., Miniati M., Monti S.
In a previous study we developed a software able to detect anomalies in CT high definition images of the thorax, possibly related to pulmonary emphysema; in this study we evaluate the possibility of applying this software to the CT images obtained in a large scale screening. In fact, theses images have been produced by a low-dose computer tomography and are affected by a noise greater than that of previously processed images. In this study we used a photometric images analysis, which gives the amount of pixels with luminance value less than a predefined threshold, and the blob analysis, which using the same threshold detects the binary objects composed of adjacent pixels and gives up their size and location. The paper reports the results obtained according two decision thresholds: we show that the photometric analysis of low-dose CT images gives no information about the presence of pulmonary emphysema, while the blob analysis gives useful descriptors

The integrated Information System of the Institute is responsible for data retrieval, storage and elaborations-transformation. The integrated Information System also distributes data to the organ users of the Institute. It is composed of: - Costs management (Geco) - Personnel management (Personale) - Employees presence management (Orario/Panda) - Project management (Redbox) - Institute website management (Sito Isti) It provides for a monitoring and reporting system so as to make it the main system for consulting aggregate information. The Integrated Information System is designed as an open system so that in the future we can possibly integrate a new Institute System. The commission defines the system architecture and the procedures the subsystem must follow.

SIND - Esempi di ispezione automatica con ultrasuoni
Chimenti M., Bozzi R., Fantini E.
The SIND system (System for Non-destructive Inspections), can drive xy scanner that move a couple of ultrasonic probes, in order to obtain maps of the inspected specimen. By using a dedicated software, the user will define the scan area and the sampling step; at the end of the inspection, the user can display the A-scan graphs relative to each measurement site or the C-scan map defined by the set of measurements. The report describes some examples obtained by means of a small scanner, used for lab applications; the examples refer to plastic and lapideous samples

Chimenti M., Bozzi R., Fantini E.
The SIND system (System for Non-destructive Inspections), has been provided with a dedicated software for automatic inspections by means of a microwave probe. Using the first software module the scan area and the scan step are determined, while using the other module graphic or numeric representations are obtained, that is C-scan maps, defined by the set of measurements, or statistics of the results. The report describes a model of the microwave probe and its characteristics, the use of the software and some examples obtained by means of a lab scanner, referring to plastic and lapideous samples.

SIND - Modulo di acquisizione di segnali US
Chimenti M., Fantini E.
The report describes the component of the H/S system SIND (System for Non-destructive Inspections), developed for the acquisition of the signals obtained by inspections based on ultrasound through- transmission. The described component is composed of several hardware modules and of a software module. Hardware modules consist on a couple of ultrasound probes, a pulse generator that drives the transmitting probe and a device for the analog to digital conversion of the signal produced by the receiving probe; the device is connected to the system PC trough an USB port and is controlled by means of a library of specific functions. The software module consists on a program developed in the Microsoft Windows environment, using the programming language Visual Basic 6.0; the module controls the acquisition of the signals obtained in the measurements positions and archives data according to the SIND's specifics.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2009

Una procedura per l'analisi numerica del tessuto polmonare in immagini CT
Chimenti M., Fantini E., Miniati M., Monti S.
The paper describes the software developed for a numerical evaluation of CT thorax images, aiming to the characterization of the pulmonary tissue... The procedure, implemented in Microsoft Windows, consists on two programs. The program Parenchima processes the images obtained in the examination of a patient in order to detect both lungs in each image; given a photometric threshold, the program detects the blobs contained in the pulmonary areas and produces the blob list whit position and shape features. The program Estrai processes the blob list obtaining a set of global parameters that quantifies the overall area of the pulmonary tissue in the processed images, the overall area of the pixels with luminance values less than the selected threshold and the distributions of blob area and shape values. The paper report an application study where the implemented procedure has been used to process images obtained by patients affected by emphysema: the study shows that the procedure can be used as diagnostic tool in routine applications.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2008
